Mysterious Monkey Pot
You might say the Maya "went ape" over monkeys, which were important animals in their culture. The Maya believed that monkeys were all that remained after a great flood destroyed the wooden people who were the third attempt the gods made at creating beings who would worship them. After the flood, people were created all over again out of corn. Monkeys are a reminder that it took several attempts to create people.
