Northwest Coast Indian Carving

Make a Bentwood Box

(20 minutes)

Make your own bentwood box, a storage container used by Northwest Coast Indian people. Decorate the box, cut it out, and then glue it together.

STEPS:

1.  If you are a Mac user:  Pull down the 'File' menu at the top of your screen, go to 'Page Setup', and reduce the page size to 82%.

2.  Now you’re ready to do your project. Take the papers you just printed out, gather the materials you need, and find a good place to play!
3.  Using crayons, markers or colored pencils, color in the bear, ovoid, and u-shaped patterns.
4.  Cut out these animal shapes.
5.  Glue one or all of the animals onto the bentwood box pattern.
6.  Add your own animals if you’d like. Hint: if you glue the animal between 2 squares, it will look really cool!
7.  Cut out the box pattern along the solid black lines.
8.  Fold along the dotted lines and bend the pattern into a box shape.
9.  Put glue on the folded tabs and attach all sides of the box together.
10.  Put your new bentwood box on your desk or table and store some of your own treasures in it!
