Brave Maya Ballplayer
The Maya ballgame was difficult and dangerous for the ball players.  Small figurines like this portrait of a female ballplayer were buried with noble people on the island of Jaina, off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.  Whistles were fitted into the backs or heads of many figurines.  Others were filled with pebbles so they rattled when shaken.
