Chair from the Past
No, the back doesn’t have the same fancy carving as the rest of the chair.  This is because people usually wouldn’t see its back.  Why not?  Because it was always up against a wall until someone wanted to use it; then it would be moved away from the wall only for as long as someone was using it.  Most of the carving on the back is at its top, called the crest rail.  Doesn’t the crest rail look like a Greek or Roman column with its carved ridges, called fluting?
