Ocean-Going Canoe
Northwest Indian people believe that every canoe has its own personality. They give canoes names based on these special characteristics. Usually canoes are named after animals, like whales or eagles. We dont know for sure, but this canoe may well have been named after the loon carved on its bow. The canoe in this photograph is named for the Squamish Nation, another group of Northwest Coast Indian people, who live near Vancouver, British Columbia.
