Ocean-Going Canoe This small canoe holds a family of four. Many canoes are much bigger, though, and can carry more than fifty people over rough ocean waters. Canoes are prized possessions, and Northwest Coast Indian people take great care of them. Traditionally, Northwest Coast Indian people protected the bottoms of their canoes from sea water by coating them with layers of seal or fish oil.
