Armor for Peaceful Times
This funny shape on the samurai's helmet (doesn't it look like an ear?) is called a "fly back." The fly back was a great place to put a family crest, or mon - the leaves and flowers of a sweet-smelling tree. A mon also appeared, sometimes, on flags for parades, swords, furniture, dishes and even the clothes worn by the warrior's servants.
